It’s the latest review of the week. This one includes reaction to Charlton’s league fixture against Portsmouth, another loss for the women in WSL and Sky Bet’s response to this website about August’s Championship Manager of the Month award which, I think it’s fair to say, was at least slightly contentious.
Bindon happy Charlton are keeping it clean
Tyler Bindon reckons the way Charlton Athletic have responded to their 4-0 beating at Stoke City underlines the “character” in Nathan Jones’ squad.
The Addicks have produced two 0-0 draws since - against QPR on Wednesday and then Portsmouth on Saturday - in SE7.
Charlton are sixth in the Championship table despite being 24th for xG (expected goals) with 4.6. They have scored six goals in seven league matches.
But Bindon was keen to talk up his side’s defensive virtues. They rank 12th for xG conceded and have three shutouts. The last time they managed clean sheets in successive Championship games was March (1-0 wins over Birmingham and Middlesbrough).
“It was a good performance from the boys,” said the Nottingham Forest loanee, speaking after the stalemate against Pompey. “Obviously you want three points, because it is a home game but we are still undefeated here.
“A clean sheet means a lot because you can’t lose. A clean sheet is amazing, so we’re still happy with that. It shows the characters we have in the building and the desire we have to work for this club (that team bounced back from Stoke).”
Bindon has partnered captain Lloyd Jones in the Charlton backline.
“I take him as a role model because he has done a lot in the game,” said the New Zealand international. “I’m very grateful for this opportunity to be here. The Championship isn’t an easy league.”

Two off as Addicks remain pointless
Charlton Athletic lost 1-0 to Everton in their second WSL match of the season and finished yesterday’s match at Goodison Park with nine players.
Summer signing Ashleigh Neville, who hit the crossbar with a long-range looping shot, was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Ruby Mace in the 58th minute.
Everton went ahead in the 77th minute. Striker Holly McNamara breezed past substitute Hawa Cissoko on the right of the box and her cross clipped off Charlton defender Leighanne Robe and past goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse.
Cissoko, signed from Parma earlier this month was dismissed in the third minute of stoppage time, for two bookable offences. Both fouls were on McNamara.
Charlton boss Karen Hills described Neville’s sending off as “questionable”.
“I don’t think the referee made the decision, I think it was the fourth [official],” said Hills. “They are a team and I guess they work together. If you watch it back it is hip on hip. Yes, her foot is a little bit higher and that’s what they’ve seen.
“I’m gutted for my team because they have worked so hard and then a decision goes against us which I thought was questionable. That changes the momentum of the game.
“We were outstanding. We showed we can compete and that we’re not here just to make up the numbers. It is night and day from last week (the 4-0 loss to Liverpool).”
Charlton are at home to London City Lionesses on Saturday (12.30pm) at The Valley. Lionesses started with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United but were beaten 2-1 by West Ham last weekend.

Jones was ‘very much in discussion’ to win Manager of the Month award
This website sent an email to Sky Bet’s comms department asking for a bit more of an explanation as to why Nathan Jones did not win the Championship Manager of the Month award for August.
Just to summarise, Swansea City’s Vitor Matos won the accolade.
His side collected seven points in the month. None too shabby. But Charlton won all three of their league games including a 2-1 victory at West Ham United. That’s a West Ham United side that have not lost since and collected big wins over Wolves (4-2), Derby County (3-0) and Wrexham (6-0). That last result took the east Londoners temporarily to the top of the table on Friday night.
Sky Bet’s response said the monthly award was “an incredibly tight decision”.
“We recognise that awards of this nature can inevitably prompt debate, and that outcomes are subjective to those responsible for judging them, but as with any judged award the decision of the judge must be final,” they wrote back. “We of course acknowledge the month Nathan Jones and Charlton Athletic had, and his inclusion in the initial shortlist shows he was very much part of the discussion when determining this month’s winner.”
It was former Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Wilson who picked the winner from the shortlist compiled.
Wilson said: “With two strong wins away from home at Stoke City and Derby County, contributing to three unbeaten games in August, Vitor has given the Swans a great start to the season.
“Equally, his side only conceded one goal in the opening three games to demonstrate their strong start defensively, whilst also scoring five goals - all of which have been away from home. An impressive month for the Swans and for Vitor who has demonstrated his tactical nous as a young head coach, helping to give his side a very positive start to the season.”
Hornets add Ant
Michail Antonio signed for Watford on Friday.
The Addicks had the veteran striker training with them last season in February but he ended up signing for Qatari side Al-Sailiya.
Antonio, 36, has been handed the number 18 shirt.
“Watford is a big club. Hopefully I can come in and bring success and help wherever I can,” he told the club’s website.

Kent Senior Cup draw
Charlton’s U21s will play Tonbridge Angels away in the second round of the Kent Senior Cup.
The Addicks have only just entered the competition after receiving a bye. They went out at the second round stage to Maidstone United last season.
The tie against Tonbridge will be played in the week commencing October 5.
Edwards back
Some excellent news on Sunday, with Josh Edwards making his playing return in Charlton U21s’ 2-2 draw against Sheffield Wednesday.
The Scottish full-back, who has not featured at first-team level for pretty much a year due to an ankle injury, got 45 minutes under his belt at Hillsborough.

Euell do the job
Jason Euell has been named as Preston interim boss after they parted company with Paul Heckingbottom on Sunday.
The former Charlton midfielder has been part of North End’s coaching team since June 2025.
Euell also managed the Addicks’ U21 side and was a first-team coach before he left in June 2022.
Charlton beat Preston 1-0 at the end of August. Heckingbottom is the first Championship boss to lose their job this season.
“Football is a results business and despite significant investment in the playing squad since Paul joined, the results during 2026 and the start of this current campaign have not been acceptable,” said a statement on North End’s website.
Preston are second from bottom of the Championship.
London Turf Wars
Charlton-residing journalist Steve Tongue is holding an author talk and discussion about his book London Turf Wars at Woolwich Centre Library on September 24 (7-8.15pm).
London Turf Wars has just been fully revised and updated with two new chapters.
There will also be a Q&A session followed by a book signing. London Turf Wars will be available to buy on the day.
Tongue, a sports journalist and broadcaster for 45 years, is a Leyton Orient season-ticket holder since he stopped doing match reports about eight years ago. He has got a season ticket for Charlton Women and gets to the occasional men’s home game.
“I first went to the Valley (for Orient away games) from 1960 onwards, then as reporter from the start of LBC in 1973, when Theo Foley became probably my closest friend in football,” said Tongue.
“I was in the Charlton end at both Wembley play-offs against Sunderland and in the Orient end there last year when most of my family were at the other end - my wife, one daughter and one son.”
