Is a transfer window ever not vital?

The answer is probably no.

But the 2025 summer transfer window for Charlton Athletic is going to be huge as they aim to build a squad capable of consolidating as a Championship club.

The Addicks’ current playing personnel has 378 matches at that level although three account for 293 of those - Matty Godden (117), Greg Docherty (90) and Luke Berry (86). The total is boosted by new signing Sonny Carey, who featured 48 times for Blackpool with Conor Coventry (28) the only other player to be in double figures.

So this is a step into the unknown for many of Nathan Jones’ squad.

Here South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition takes a look at each position and whether there are set to be reinforcements.

THE GOALKEEPERS

Nathan Jones will be looking to add in this department - not least because the Welshman was aiming to bring in a new stopper 12 months ago.

Will Mannion started and finished last season as first choice, with Ashley Maynard-Brewer handed a run when the former Hull City keeper was injured, and did not concede in the play-off matches.

Mannion kept 15 clean sheets but, according to website FOTMOB, was 13th when it came to average save percentage (67.1). Wrexham’s Arthur Okonkwo and Birmingham City’s Ryan Allsop were top of that metric with 78.1 and 78.0 respectively. Maynard-Brewer had a save percentage of 64.6.
