'Players are being poorly advised - the academy game can be a really murky industry' - football agent gives candid assessment on youngsters de-registering from academies
Charlton Athletic have had plenty of success with players making first-team breakthroughs but set to lose three players at U14 level
A top football agent has talked to South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition about the increase in top youngsters de-registering at U14 level - with a claim made by a youth football account on social media that some of the Addicks players are set to leave their academy.
The account, which has more than 40,000 followers, posted a list of de-registrations - including prospects from Everton, Ipswich Town, West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland, Watford, Crystal Palace and Wolves..
Four Charlton Athletic players were listed but this website understands that one of the names included as moving on was incorrect information.
The Addicks have had plenty of success with bringing young talent through with the likes of Ezri Konsa, Joe Gomez and Ademola Lookman the most high-profile success stories in recent times. Konsa started for England in their World Cup opener against Croatia last night.
Tyreece Campbell, a product of their academy system, has made 170 first-team appearances. Others to come through the youth-set at Sparrows Lane and play at senior level in recent seasons includes Miles Leaburn, Ibby Fullah, Karoy Anderson, Keenan Gough and Daniel Kanu. There are also high hopes for Micah Mbick, the subject of January transfer window interest from Brighton, who impressed on loan at Colchester United.
But, like any club and particularly one that has not been in the top flight since 2007, there have been unwanted exits.
