Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has described the need to bring in a new midfielder in this transfer window as “massive”.

The Addicks have made five signings in the summer trading period - three defenders and two attackers.

Charlton have cut their options in the middle of the park after selling Karoy Anderson to Blackpool.

Last night they ran the rule over trialist Nathaniel Chalobah. The 31-year-old midfielder, who had been with Sheffield Wednesday for the previous two seasons, is a free agent.

The Addicks have also been linked with Estoril’s Jordan Holsgrove. The 26-year-old Scot is contracted with the Portuguese side until the summer of 2028.

Jones paired academy product Alan Mwamba, 19, with Chalobah in his starting line-up in Tuesday evening’s 2-0 victory over Colchester United.

Asked by South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition how big a priority adding in central midfield is, Jones responded: “Massive.
