Nathan Jones admitted that Charlton Athletic’s 2-1 win at West Ham United today was one of the most special moments since he took the job.

The Addicks had to withstand some heavy pressure at London Stadium but also caused plenty of problems of their own, particularly during the opening 45 minutes.

They had a dream start in east London as they went ahead after just seven minutes. Lloyd Jones controlled Sonny Carey’s long throw on his chest before going with an overhead kick to beat Hammers goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

Tyreece Campbell has scored in every fixture this season. The winger produced a low finish into the right corner of the net in the 56th minute after Miles Leaburn dispossessed Konstantinos Mavropanos.

West Ham halved the deficit when Joel Piroe, signed on a season-long loan from Leeds United, converted from close range in the 75th minute.

Debutant goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo made a fine fingertip save to frustrate substitute Divine Mukasa.

Taty Castellanos had a glorious chance to level the Championship match in the second minute of stoppage time. Conor Coventry’s arm blocked a shot by Lewis Orford but the South American striker’s penalty hit the right post.

Charlton have won all three matches this season and next up is a trip to Tottenham on Wednesday in the EFL Cup. Spurs were heavily beaten 3-0 at Brentford today in their Premier League opener.

Below is pretty much every word from Jones’ post-match press conference.

Where does that performance rank in your time as Charlton manager?

Jones: “Oh, it’s right up there. Just the magnitude of the game and the opposition.

“We can’t get carried away because I said in my press on Thursday that this is the norm now. It’s not a cup game or one-off game - this is the league. We had to be very organised and very good tactically, which we were.
