“It’s onside and it has cost us the three points. The arrogance of the linesman is mental. He’s looking at me like I’ve just volleyed his cat.”

That Nathan Jones comment to Sky Sports in his post-match interview following Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with QPR went viral on social media.

The Charlton Athletic boss was airing his frustration at Tyreece Campbell’s first-half goal being disallowed due to offside. Replays certainly seemed to show that the attacker, who has netted four times in all competitions, was onside when he raced on to Oliver Skipp’s pass to beat R’s keeper Pierce Charles.

Radio station talkSPORT described his interview as an “all-timer”. Another account tweeted: “Interview of the season has dropped, and who else bar Nathan Jones?”

So what did Jones make of the way that soundbite drew such a reaction?

“There was nothing pre-meditated about that,” he told South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition. “Just to clarify, I’ve never volleyed a cat. I am an animal lover.
