'He is one of our own and always welcome back' - Karoy Anderson makes permanent Charlton Athletic exit as Blackpool transfer confirmed

Midfielder posts farewell message to supporters after 13 years with Addicks

Karoy Anderson has completed a permanent transfer to Blackpool.

The midfielder, 21, made 10 Championship appearances for Charlton Athletic in the first half of last season but joined the Tangerines at the end of the winter transfer window.

We reported at the start of June that Anderson was a target for Blackpool.

The League One side made their opening bid for the player at the end of that month.

The fee for Anderson, capped 19 times by Jamaica, has not been disclosed. He has signed a four-year contract with a club option of another 12 months.

Anderson made 88 first-team appearances for Charlton and scored five goals.

He told the club’s website: “To those that have supported me and the club over the years, I just want to say a very big thank you. From going to The Valley as an academy player every week, hoping to reach that stage, to then stepping out onto The Valley and living out those dreams has been a surreal experience for me and that’s credit to all of those who make Charlton the club that it is.

“I’d like to thank Steve Avory, Rhys Williams, Jason Pearce, Hamza Serrar, Daniel Gill, Dave Huzzey, Joe Francis and many, many others who worked with me tirelessly and dedicated time to improve and develop me over the years.

“I’m grateful for all of the managers I’ve had over the years who gave me an opportunity to play for the club that I’ve been at from the age of eight, and the manager Nathan Jones and his staff who navigated the club to promotion, allowing me to live out a dream of playing at Wembley and getting promoted, similar to when I sat in the stands at Wembley and watched the team of 2019 get promoted. It’s been a special journey filled with many ups and downs, but I’ll forever be grateful. I wish you all the very best.”

Anderson made his professional debut for Charlton at the age of 18 - an EFL Trophy tie against Plymouth. He signed a new deal until 2028 in September.

The appointment of Nathan Jones was a positive outcome for the Lewisham-born man as his industry and energy put him in the Welshman’s good books.

Anderson played 46 times in all competitions in the 2024-25 League One promotion-winning season.

While he was on the bench for Jones’ first match in charge, he went on to start 14 of the final 15 matches in the 2023-24 campaign.

Anderson netted the decisive goal in Charlton’s 2-1 win at Derby County in February 2024 which clinched a first victory for Jones after replacing Michael Appleton.

“Karoy’s been magnificent since I came in - he scored some vital goals in the first six months I was here and then he was a really valued and productive member in our promotion year,” Jones told the club’s official website. “He played games in the Championship but wanted to play week in, week out and that’s something we couldn’t guarantee.

“For the second half of last season, he went on loan to Blackpool and did fantastically well. They’ve come in and wanted to buy him. Karoy would’ve been a valued squad member here, but with the way that we want to evolve we couldn’t guarantee him that game time, so we felt it was only fair to allow him to go and to play regular first-team football.

“We wish him all the best - he’s a wonderful kid and he’s been a wonderful servant for us. He’s someone that we care deeply about and we hope that he has a wonderful career, because he deserves it. He’s always welcome back here because he’s one of our own.”

Anderson featured 16 times for Blackpool and started their final four matches - all victories.

Blackpool head coach Ian Evatt said: “It’s been no secret that we wanted to bring Karoy back to the club as soon as last season finished.

“It’s taken a bit of time to get the deal over the line, but I’m delighted to be able to work with Karoy again as he was a major reason for our fine form at the back end of last season.

“It’s a real show of intent from Simon (Sadler, Blackpool chairman) and the club to bring someone of Karoy’s talent in on a permanent and long-term deal and I can’t wait to see him playing in tangerine once again.”
