From The Valley Vault: The first South London Press interview with new Charlton Athletic signing Shaun Bartlett
A classic newspaper cutting from December 2000 featuring the Addicks' new South African signing
I’ve delved back into some of my old press cuttings from the South London Press and selected a piece that went into the Friday edition (back then the newspaper also had a Tuesday paper which tended to focus purely on match reports and reaction) featuring Shaun Bartlett ,which was published on December 1, 2000.
The striker, who played 139 matches and scored 26 goals for the Addicks, had just agreed a loan switch to Alan Curbishley’s side.
Charlton were 12th in the Premiership table at the time with 21 points from their opening 15 matches - 10 clear of 18th-placed Middlesbrough.
Bartlett opened his account with two goals in a 3-3 draw against Manchester United in December 2000.
He netted seven times before the end of the campaign, including a superb volley against Leicester which won Premiership Goal of the Season in 2000-01.
He was released in 2006.
