I’ve delved back into some of my old press cuttings from the South London Press and selected my match report that was published on April 26, 2000, two days after a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park secured the old Division One title.

HEADLINE: CHAMPS AT LAST!

Subhead: Addicks end 65-year wait to clinch a title by landing the Division One championship

Champions. Premiership football. Those are the three delicious words that will be rolling off Charlton fans’ tongues after they rounded off an amazing season on Monday

As the elation starts to slowly lessen, the full impact of what Alan Curbishley and his squad have achieved will be slowly sinking in, because the current Addicks team will go down in history after claiming the club’s first championship since picking up the Third Division South title way back in 1935.

This accolade easily overshadows that - and even the unforgettable play-off final at Wembley two years ago. Because while the trip to the Twin Towers was the kind of emotion-charged game that rarely comes along more than once or twice in a lifetime, winning a championship is even rarer.

Charlton made it less dramatic with the way that they powered away from the pack with a magic start to the millennium, and the fact they did not surge across the finishing line with a flourish does not deserve to be dwelled upon.
