'Freedom allowed him to find explosive best form'
Blackpool reporter gives verdict on Charlton Athletic's new signing Sonny Carey
Sonny Carey is Charlton Athletic’s first signing this summer with the Championship newcomers moving quickly to secure his services as his Blackpool contract draws to an end - but here we delve a little deeper to find out what made his previous campaign a big success.
The 24-year-old has agreed an Addicks contract until 2028 and it will kick in once his existing terms at Bloomfield Road expire at the end of this month.
Carey scored 11 goals from midfield last season in 37 appearances.

He has featured 48 times in the Championship while on Blackpool’s books.
Carey had 63 shots last season in League One with 48 per cent on target. He netted eight times in that competition with an xG (expected goals) of 6.51. Two of his goals came from 35 shots taken outside of the penalty box - with the other six coming from 28 attempts inside it.
He started in Norwich City’s academy but was released in 2017. He kicked his career on with King’s Lynn before landing a move back into the professional game in June 2021 when he joined the Tangerines.
