Stockport County manager Dave Challinor has provided extra insight into Isaac ‘Tanto’ Olaofe’s game - and reckons some Championship sides could set up in the perfect way for the new Charlton Athletic signing to do serious damage.

The Addicks paid in the region of £1.5million for the 25-year-old striker at the start of this month.

Olaofe, who came through Millwall’s academy, hit 20 goals for Stockport when they won the League Two title in the 2023-24 season.

He also hit double figures in the most recent campaign, notching 12 goals in 51 appearances in all competitions as County came up just short in the League One play-offs.

Challinor knows Olaofe’s strengths about as well as anybody. He tried to sign him while he was Hartlepool United boss and the Lions knocked back a summer approach by Stockport before selling the frontman to them in December 2022.

“We’d seen Tanto and played against him in his first loan at Sutton,” Challinor, 49, told South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition. “He did really well in the National League. Sutton got promoted that year (2021) and we (Hartlepool) ended up going up through the play-offs.

“There was always an interest, even if the chances of getting him then were probably a bit far-fetched.

“Someone of Tanto’s profile is difficult to find but we felt he would be a really good fit in the team we had at Stockport. A bit like a dog with a bone, we had to stick at it to get him. Tanto was someone that we felt we could improve. He did really, really well for us.”

Challinor uses the word ‘profile’ quite often when discussing Olaofe.
