Charlton Athletic are down to 19th in the Championship table after today’s 3-1 home loss to Norwich City.
In a clash of two out-of-form sides, something had to give.
Unfortunately it was the Canaries, who had lost their last five league matches, who halted that run.
Charlton were top of the standings after their most recent three-point haul - the August 29 victory over Preston North End. At that stage they were the only team in England’s second tier still with a 100 per cent record intact.
That feels like a long time ago.
Charlton have picked up five points from a possible 27 since the opening month to slide closer and closer to the relegation zone.
Two of their three wins are against Derby and Preston, who occupy the bottom two spots in the division.
The Addicks took the lead - just like they did in the 1-1 draw against Bristol City last time out in SE7 - through Charlie Kelman. The frontman was one of four changes made by Nathan Jones as he looked for a reaction to the 2-0 reverse at Watford. Kelman showed excellent composure to finish from Joe Rankin-Costello’s pass in the 10th minute.
But Charlton’s positive start, much like their high-energy press, did not last.
