Charlton Athletic scoring stat underlines why the first goal is massive in their Championship matches this season
Will Addicks bounce back from Portsmouth loss with a positive outcome at in-form Southampton on Saturday?
Charlton Athletic have not enjoyed their matches against South Coast opposition this season. They get one more chance to change that when they head to Southampton on Saturday.
Tuesday evening’s 3-1 reverse at the hands of Portsmouth can be filed in the 2025-26 Championship concertina folder in the section marked ‘desperately disappointing’.
The Addicks have produced some poor performances since promotion, which is to be expected as they adjust to England’s second tier. I’d pick out Norwich, Millwall and Stoke away as well as Southampton at home where they have been distinctly second best. The lacklustre nature of the reverse to Pompey can be added to an unwanted collection.
Charlton’s combined scoreline against the Championship’s South Coast duo reads played three and lost three. Ten goals conceded and three scored.

Portsmouth, despite missing 13 first-team players, celebrated their first league double over the Addicks since the 1985-86 season. Yang Min-Hyeok’s stoppage-time winner in the reverse fixture, just seconds after Harvey Knibbs’ goal appeared to have secured a draw, ended Charlton’s eight-match unbeaten run at Fratton Park, seven of those victories, which stretched back to 2005.
Charlton’s team has been settled since the 2-0 victory at Leicester on January 31. The only change since then had been up front when Miles Leaburn missed the Stoke fixture with a shoulder injury. Leaburn returned against Pompey. Nathan Jones has been able to name a settled side - but they played like complete strangers last night.
Charlton got what they deserved against Portsmouth. Nothing.
