While waiting pitchside for the post-mortem on Charlton Athletic’s latest derby debacle, the music pumped out of the home dressing room.

Don’t Go Breaking My Heart sang Elton John and Kiki Dee.

Except that is exactly what Millwall did to the Addicks in a deeply demoralising defeat for Nathan Jones’ side. They broke their spirit. Charlton were swatted aside.

We don’t need to delve too deeply into the recent history of these fixtures between the sides. Everyone knows the score in that regard. Since 1996, they have been fixtures to endure rather than gain any semblance of enjoyment.
