Nathan Jones has talked to South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition about Reece Burke not being registered in their 25-man EFL squad.

The governing body has a limit on how many players over the age of 21 can be named and anyone omitted is not able to feature in competitive matches until the January transfer window.

The Addicks cancelled club captain Greg Docherty’s contract by mutual consent last week. The Scot still had a deal until the end of June but would not have made their squad.

Burke, signed from Luton Town in July 2025, is set to be a free agent next summer although the club have a 12-month extension option.

The 30-year-old defender has not been in any of their matchday squads this season. He scored once in 17 Championship appearances in the previous campaign - 12 of those starts.

Burke’s most recent competitive outing was the 3-0 loss to Swansea City on the final day of last season. He played 60 minutes to take his total minutes in Charlton colours to 946.
