Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones has explained why he produced subdued celebrations when he left The Valley pitch after last night’s 1-0 victory over Stoke City.

Tyreece Campbell scored his third goal of the Championship season and it proved decisive as the Addicks stayed 18th but crucially moved seven points clear of the relegation places.

The victory was Jones’ second against Stoke City since he was sacked by them in November 2019. The Welshman was repeatedly taunted by the away support and could be seen shouting back at them at the full-time whistle.

At one stage it appeared he was not going to do his fist pump celebration in front of the Covered End as he walked towards the tunnel - pointing back at his players.

Jones eventually did give the home fans what they wanted but in a more restrained fashion.

“I wanted them (the players) to take it tonight - the accolades and stuff,” he said, when asked about his full-time reaction.
