Charlton Athletic have moved to address their goalkeeping situation by completing a season-long loan move for Wrexham’s Arthur Okonkwo.
The 24-year-old has signed for the Addicks in time to be in line for his debut at West Ham United on Saturday, although boss Nathan Jones has named the same starting 11 for the first two matches of the 2026-27 campaign.
Okonkwo had lost his number one status at Wrexham after they completed a big-money swoop for Anthony Patterson from Sunderland. Patterson started Monday’s 1-1 derby draw at Cardiff with Danny Ward deputising on the bench.
Okonkwo is inside the final year of his contract with the Welsh club and has completed a move back to the capital. His formative years were spent in Arsenal’s academy set-up.
He never made a senior appearance for the Gunners but had loans to Sturm Graz, Crewe Alexandra and Wrexham. He joined the latter permanently when his Arsenal deal expired in July 2024.
Okonkwo, who won back-to-back promotions with Wrexham that took them from League Two to the Championship, made appearances for England at a number of junior levels but switched international allegiance to Nigeria, winning two senior caps.

It was clear that Charlton were going to shake-up their goalkeeping set-up when Thomas Kaminski was not in their matchday squad for last weekend’s Championship opener against Derby County.
Jones has previously hinted he may expand on the Belgian’s omission in the future but produced a succinct response when asked about Kaminski’s absence for the 2-1 win over the Rams.
“I picked my best two keepers,” said the Addicks manager.
Now that number has swelled to three under consideration after Okonkwo, also linked with Bolton Wanderers, headed to south London.
South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition spoke exclusively to Jones about the deal, the club’s eighth incoming of the window.
