Nathan Jones accused his Charlton Athletic side of being overpowered by Portsmouth in last night’s 3-1 loss at The Valley.

The South Coast outfit arrived in SE7 with a significant injury crisis that meant they had 13 first-team players unavailable.

But Portsmouth took the lead in the 22nd minute, Terry Devlin’s 25-yard swerving shot squeezed through the legs of Thomas Kaminski.

Colby Bishop converted a penalty before the break after Amari’i Bell was penalised for handball.

It was to get worse for the Addicks in the 56th minute, Devlin again beating Kaminski from range, this time from around 30 yards out. Again there looked to be movement of the ball as it went in off the inside of the right upright.

Jayden Fevrier, one of three changes made by Jones at the start of the second half, cut the deficit in the 64th minute. It was the on-loan Stockport County winger’s first goal since arriving at the end of the winter transfer window.

Jones said: “We were poor tonight. We had a glorious opportunity after the first minute, which would really have set the tone for the night. We are clean in. We missed that and got dominated physically between both boxes.

“The goals….I can moan about them because (the first one) has gone straight through our goalkeeper. It shouldn’t go in. It’s poor - I expect him to save that.

“The second is a penalty that touches his chest first and then a handball. If you VAR it then it’s not a pen, but we have no VAR.
