Nathan Jones has told South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition that the club’s move for free agent Jerome Roussillon is a “calculated gamble”.

The Addicks have been depleted on the left side of their defence with Josh Edwards out since the end of September with ankle damage sustained against Blackburn Rovers.

Amari’i Bell and Onel Hernandez have featured in the wing-back spot since the Scot was sidelined. The former has also missed recent matches but was back on the bench, although unused, for Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to Stoke City.

Roussillon, 32, has been a free agent since leaving Union Berlin in the summer.

He has also played for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. Before that the Guadeloupe international, capped at U18 and U20 level by France, represented Sochaux and Montpellier.

Roussillon is closing in on 350 first-team matches and that includes 10 appearances in both the Champions League and Europa League.

His last club game came as a 78th-minute substitute in Union Berlin’s 0-0 draw at Leverkusen on April 12.

He played for Guadeloupe in Gold Cup Group C matches against Panama and Jamaica in June.

Roussillon has been training with Charlton for a few weeks before signing. It was the same scenario with Hernandez. Both players are only on deals until the January transfer window.
