Charlton Athletic boss explains why there will no repeat of summer transfer window strategy, his stance on loan signings and discusses striker Dan Kanu
Nathan Jones also quizzed about cutting contracted squad of 28 first-team players for next season
Charlton Athletic will not be repeating last summer’s strategy of signing top performers in League One as manager Nathan Jones aims to move the club into the next phase of their progression in the Championship.
The Addicks signed Charlie Kelman (on loan at Leyton Orient from QPR), Rob Apter (Blackpool), Isaac Olaofe (Stockport County), Sonny Carey (Blackpool) and Harvey Knibbs (Reading) after they won promotion to England’s second tier.
Carey, a free transfer addition, has been a success with eight goals. Knibbs arrived nursing a foot issue which disrupted his pre-season preparations and sustained ankle ligament damage after a bad tackle which resulted in a red card for Sheffield United’s El Hadji Djibril Soumare.

Apter and Olaofe struggled to get minutes as the first half of the campaign progressed and were loaned out to Bolton and Stockport.
Jones was asked by South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition if targeting the elite from League One would be pursued again.
“No,” said the Welshman. “We have enough of last year’s top-end League One players that we have to get to top Championship level and that is constant work. That also takes time.
