Former Grandstand and Sportsnight host on working for the BBC and starting off his reporting career at South East London & Kentish Mercury

South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition has interviewed Steve Rider, one of this country’s top sports presenters.

Rider, who presented Grandstand and Sportsnight on the BBC for more than two decades, retired in 2025.

On this podcast episode the 76-year-old talks about living just around the corner from The Valley and growing up supporting the Addicks. He also picks his favourite Charlton players.

Plus we talk to Rider about his career. He started locally, reporting on the Addicks for the South East London & Kentish Mercury newspaper, before his move into TV.

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2023 and received treatment. Rider recently hosted the launch event for Prostate United 2026 - people are running or walking 5K or 10K every day in October to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. More details can be found here.

Prostate Cancer UK is a charity that means a lot to me - my dad passed away from the disease but early diagnosis allowed him to receive treatment and spend more time with his loved ones. I’m making this pod a free listen, so please do share and make sure we help promote the event.
